Stanislav Libensky and Jaroslava Brychtova
(b. 1922–2002) and (b. 1924) Czech Republic
This husband and wife team are quite simply two of the greatest glass sculptors
of the 20th century. Their work, instantly recognisable, is characterised by
simple block shapes infused with subtle colour and nuances.
By melting the glass in open forms and using the innovative pâte de verre technique, thes legendary artists broke away from traditional liquid glass worked in furnaces. Libensky, as professor at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague from 1963-1987, had a profound influence on several generations of glass artists.
