Richard Čermák

(b. 1981) Czech Republic
Čermák is famous for his modelled visions in enriched, melted glass. His use of surreal elements is particularly striking. He creates models by chopping, trimming and grinding boards with coarse tools, achieving a rare rawness of expression, making his work highly tactile and obtaining striking nuances of colour. He is also changing the way he uses colour, combining glass of complementary colours to create tension and contrasts.

His inspiration remains nature and the way man-made objects appear and disappear. This was stimulated by finding disintegrating hulls of wrecked ships – protruding decks and other parts, covered with rust and layers of detritus – washed up on the beach in Argentina.
